About the Report

The “Outline of the 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development of the People’s Republic of China and the Long-Range Objectives through the Year 2035” adopted in March 2021 sets a goal for Hong Kong to develop into an international innovation and technology (I&T) hub to promote Hong Kong’s innovation within Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and beyond.

Under this national development direction, it is imperative to have a systematic patent landscape report to present the patterns of patenting activities and innovation to play an active role in supporting the business and technology development of local enterprises.

Funded by the Trade and Industrial Organisation Support Fund of the Trade and Industry Department, HKSAR Government, the Federation of Hong Kong Industries and Hong Kong Productivity Council are conducting the premier city-level Hong Kong Patent Landscape Report (“The Report”) which will be released in August 2023 to provide a comprehensive landscape of Hong Kong and worldwide patenting and filing trends, which will be used for identifying the competitive strengths and promising fields of Hong Kong innovations.

The Report consists of three major parts:

(1) Research of Innovation and Patent Filing Trends Worldwide and in Hong Kong;
(2) Enterprise interviews;
(3) Comprehensive understanding of Hong Kong’s patent system and patenting trends.

The results of the Report will be helpful references to small and medium enterprises (“SMEs”) and start-ups in planning their research and development (“R&D”) activities and patent protection strategies, enabling the related industries to explore and grasp new opportunities.
